Japanese language was first introduced to the Department of Modern Languages as a certificate course in 1977. In 1978, Japanese was introduced as a subject in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree programme, marking an important step in the development of Japanese studies at the university of Kelaniya.
Today, we offer two main undergraduate degree programmes: the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree Programme and the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Japanese. In addition, we offer a Postgraduate Diploma in Japanese Language, which provides graduates and Japanese language teachers with opportunities to further improve their knowledge and professional skills. We also conduct certificate courses that are open to both internal and external students who are interested in learning the Japanese language and culture. Furthermore, we offer a Japanese language teacher training course for external candidates.
