Japanese language was first introduced to the Department of Modern Languages as a certificate course in 1977. In 1978, Japanese was introduced as a subject in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree programme, marking an important step in the development of Japanese studies at the university of Kelaniya.
Today, we offer two main undergraduate degree programmes: the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree Programme and the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Japanese. In addition, we offer a Postgraduate Diploma in Japanese Language, which provides graduates and Japanese language teachers with opportunities to further improve their knowledge and professional skills. We also conduct certificate courses that are open to both internal and external students who are interested in learning the Japanese language and culture. Furthermore, we offer a Japanese language teacher training course for external candidates.
Apart from these academic programmes, our undergraduates receive valuable opportunities every year to experience Japan through various scholarships, including the MEXT Scholarship, as well as student exchange programmes with Japanese universities such as Shinshu University, Utsunomiya University, Kyushu Sangyo University, and Soka University. In addition, students actively participate in extracurricular activities, summer camps, exchange programmes, and cultural festivals such as Bon Odori and Hinamatsuri. These activities help students to develop a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and traditions.
To enter the degree programme at the University of Kelaniya, students are required to have studied Japanese as a subject for the Advanced Level (A/L) examination. By the end of the degree programme, most undergraduates are able to pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N2 level or higher. The programme also prepares students for professional working environments through subjects such as intercultural communication, information technology, tourism, and related fields.
The ultimate goal of the Japanese Language Unit of the Department of Modern Languages is to equip students not only with Japanese language proficiency, but also with the cultural and professional skills necessary to succeed in Japanese working environments.
